Phantom, Dark Musicals Book #1

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.
Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.
Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

Coming March 29, 2013- Demon, Dark Musicals #2

When Justyn and Rebecca set off for the New York School of Performing Arts, they think their dreams are about to come true. To their dismay, they aren’t in high school anymore, and the competition is steep. Rebecca must compete against accomplished singers for a role in the production of Demon Barber, including a stunning Gothic diva with her sights set on Justyn.
It doesn't help that things keep disappearing from their apartment or that Rebecca's father refuses to accept that Justyn is an essential part of her life. Yet, all this seems minimal in comparison to the serial rapist terrorizing the campus.
Consumed by fear and obsessed with revenge, Rebecca and Justyn start living the story of Sweeney Todd—both on and off the stage.

I’ve been writing since first setting pencil to steno pad at age 8. A year later, I began developing the world of my current series-in-progress, and even created its title, The Silver Sphere. Now, with the support of years of experience, those early maps and back stories have progressed into what I hope is a fresh and entertaining take on the classic young adult fantasy adventure.
Despite my frequent escapes into parallel worlds, I root myself firmly in my very real family and community. When not pacing the yard maniacally after every few pages of writing, I spend as much time as possible hanging out with my studly 9-year-old son, and my inspirational wife Jenna. I also coach several local youth sports teams in Beverly Hills, and alternate between yelling at my two crazy Corgis and hiking with my trained German Shepherd.
For more, join me in my favorite fantasy worlds, from Lord of the Rings to the creations of C.S. Lewis, Anne McCaffrey and Terry Brooks. Even more importantly, stop by and say hello on my Facebook page at AuthorMichaelDadich, tweet me at @MichaelDadich, and stalk my website athttp://www.thesilversphere.org.

Zack had his hands full because of Matt’s unusual powers. He has visions and dreams that come true, and when he gets angry or upset, he can move things with his mind. Because of this, evil seeks him, keeping Zack on his toes as his protector.
As the brothers grew older, they became hunters, pursuing evil supernatural forces. After Matthew has a dream, it sends them on a hunt for cave, not knowing why, but realizing it is necessary. When they arrive, Matt finds the vision was a trap.
A Darkness like no other wants to control Matt and kill Zack. The Darkness is named, Alanya, which means, The Destroyer.
Alanya hates the brothers. In the past, every time he tried to apprehend Matt, Zack would thwart him by protecting his brother. Alanya is incensed that a mere human boy can beat him, for demons are not to be defied.
When Alanya asks Zack, “How far will you go to save your brother?” Zack answers, “As far as I have to.”
Now, the brothers are faced with a deadly force they never had to deal with before. This demon is on a deadly mission to destroy everything the brothers hold dear. If the McCannon’s are not careful, neither of them will be able to escape.

EXCERPT
He roamed through the cave, listening to the sounds around him.  Water dripped into an underground pool further down, the drops spaced several seconds apart and the splash echoing off the rocks.  Sand and pebbles crunched under his feet, and wind whistled across the cave opening, all of it familiar. He’d walked that cave a million times for a million reasons. His domain — where he drew his strength — also became his weakness at times, for the cave was alive.
His name, Alanya, meant The Destroyer. He wandered the ages, seeking to slaughter people who held special gifts.  He fed on them for their strength and power, each special power offering a distinctive flavor.  Their cries resonated in the cave’s memory; their blood splattered on its walls and drenched its floors.  If he closed his eyes and concentrated, he could still smell the coppery tang.
Strolling to the mouth of the cave, he looked at but
didn’t see the forest.  His mind seethed in his hatred for the brothers Zachariah and Matthew McCannon.

                                                THE DREAM...
A young girl with hair the color of the sun wanders through a grassy meadow bursting with colorful wildflowers. Her eyes are drawn to the cragged branches of a gnarled elderberry tree. Hovering high above her is a spectacular indigo butterfly. Sunlight dances on its iridescent wings.
The butterfly flutters towards the clearing’s edge before disappearing into the canopy overhead. The girl searches anxiously for the path, unable to fi nd her way in the darkness. Every shadow becomes a possible threat.
She searches for the path by the light of the moon, yearning for a sign that will lead her out of the darkness. On the verge of collapse, the girl falls to the ground. A dark shadow approaches. The girl struggles to pull herself up from the place where she has fallen.
A voice softly whispers, “Hello.” Resting on a rock is the indigo butterfly.
“I am lost!” the girl cries out in fear. She covers her face with trembling hands.
“Dear child, you are never lost.” The butterfly leads the young girl to the clearing.
The butterfly effortlessly transforms into a beautiful maiden. Her shimmering indigo gown gleams in the moonlight, and her flowing hair smells like jasmine. Clouds of tiny lavender butterflies swirl around her. With a sweep of her hand, she gestures to the surrounding woods.
“All writers begin their lives in the darkness, cloaked where the alchemy of transformation resides. One must allow for this precious unfolding before emerging into the light. Without it, the journey is meaningless. Soon, you will be called. Do not be afraid. When you are ready they will be waiting for you. Remember all that I have told you.”
The maiden places an enormous book with a frayed red velvet cover into the girl’s hands. A golden tassel hangs from the spine of the book. The script has been recorded in rich, dark hues matching the maiden’s gown.
The edge of each page has been gilded from gold, and though it appears to be extremely heavy, the book is entirely weightless. Within a moment, the book fades from her hands. The maiden raises her cloak and disappears into the fading night. The girl is alone again in the woods, but this time she can see the clearing. As she departs the forest, the wind stirs gently for a moment. On the winds of the night, the maiden’s voice calls once again:

“Go forth with the soul of an artist with the wings of a butterfly…”

EXCERPT

“I guess I’ll just know it when that time finally comes along,” he whispers. His lips graze my cheek and we stop waltzing. His hand comes up and brushes my flyaway bangs behind my ear, the tips of his fingers running along the back of my earlobe. An overpowering wave of desire and anticipation wells up from my stomach, causing my internal hurricane to erupt into a monsoon. I let his eyes lock with mine, restraining me like a pair of handcuffs. They inspect me, almost like they’re looking right through my skin and into everything that’s underneath, begging to learn anything and everything about me. I don’t move.  Maybe if I can manage to stay totally still, this moment might last forever.
His face moves closer. My chest is caving in on itself.
            Is this it?

GUEST POST
The Importance of Labeling
by Pavarti K Tyler
The Young Adult Revolution is underway!  There are so many books targeted to this demographic it gets hard to know which ones are worth reading.  It’s exciting though, when I was a teenager there was nothing like this available.  It was Roald Dahl or Lord of the Rings, there was no in-between.

The problem though is that no one seems to be monitoring what is labeled YA and what isn’t.  Thanks to the popularity of Twilight and The Hunger Games, more and more adults are choosing YA books than ever before.  Unfortunately the result of that is Authors are writing to appeal to the adults reading YA.

My daughter is nine and reads well above grade level.  When she wants a new book from the library or we’re in a bookstore the appropriate place for her to look is the YA section.  Most bookstores don’t have a Middle Grade section, although I think they should.  Her current favorites are The Red Pyramid and The Sisters Grimm.

I wish I could let her just browse and flip through books and loose herself in the glory of finding a new fantastic tome.  But I can’t.  I can’t because she’s just as likely to come upon some Vampire psudo-sex scene as she is to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins!

Especially in the Self-Publishing World, more and more authors are taking some serious liberties with the definition of YA.  Everyone certainly gets to have their own opinion but to me, if it’s YA there should be no explicit descriptions of genitalia.

This is why in the marketing of my new serial novel Two Moons of Sera, I have decided notto list it as a YA book.  The first part definitely reads like YA but I know what is coming and for me, its material more geared toward adults or teens who can handle adult themes, and therefore adult novels.  I’m not one to censor and would never say a teen shouldn’t read it, but I think it’s only fair for them to know what they’re getting into.

So the tagline I’ve adopted for 2MOSis “All the fun of YA written for Adults.” Hopefully that will entice readers more than just having it shelved next to Twilight.
