Netteby Barbara Rayne
In a world where gender was distinguished by the eye color, blue for female and brown for male, she had the misfortune of being born as brown eyed girl. Being ugly and a freak to everyone was the least of her troubles. Immortal and destined to be a queen, her mere existence was a threat to the king. After everyone she loved was brutally murdered, she had no choice but to pursue the path she was destined. In a world that made it obvious there was no place in it for her, immortal Nette will have to make room even if it means killing them all.Kindle Edition, 162 pagesPublished March 12th 2012 by Barbara Rayne
Nette is a
girl with brown eyes. It’s not a big deal in our world, but what about the
world where gender is defined by eye color – blue for girls and brown for boys?
She lives alone in a bubble, doesn’t eat or drink. Her only friend is a red
light… Nette certainly isn’t ordinary.
It was a little hard to get used to the author’s writing style. It wasn’t
better or worse than what usually is in YA books, it was just very simple. And
I liked it to be honest! It made Nette really fast to read.
What I loved is a lot of action! When one thing in the plot was explained and
ended, another thing happened! Not even a part of it was boring.
This is also a story about humanity and longing for power. It annoyed me a lot
– Nette was so good to everyone, saved so many people’s lives and almost
everyone betrayed her. I felt a lot of sympathy to this girl. Even though she
was immortal there’s one thing that can hurt everyone, always – love.
I loved this part of the plot. The love story was full of twists and it was a
nice change to instant-love romances.
The only thing I’d like to add is that it would be a perfect movie of TV show!
first one is for Kindle version, second one for paperback.
I simply love them!
As an urban child, my getaway from the noise and fast paced city was escaping into the world of books. I lived the lives of characters and subsequently played with alternative scenarios in my own imagination. I created my own plots, added my own role, and changed the world.
When I grew up, I realized just how little a person can change in the society, but the habit of alternative scenarios remained. The most talented writer in the world is the life itself and my books are alternative scenarios of what I read in it. Often, you will recognize the seeds of my imaginary future dystopian societies in our present, and hopefully it will make you look at things differently.
The books I write deal with intelligent individuals, well educated, absolutely aware of the world around them, well read, wise; and their clash with societies whose targets are usually those individuals. Why intelligent and wise individuals are dangerous to any regime is best described in this quote by Osho:
“No Society Wants You to Become Wise”
No society wants you to become wise: it is against the investment of all societies. If people are wise they cannot be exploited. If they are intelligent they cannot be subjugated, they cannot be forced into a mechanical life, to live like robots. They will assert themselves -- they will assert their individuality. They will have the fragrance of rebellion around them; they will want to live in freedom.
Freedom comes with wisdom, intrinsically -- they are inseparable -- and no society wants people to be free. The communist society, the fascist society, the capitalist society, the Hindu, the Mohammedan, the Christian -- no society likes people to use their own intelligence because the moment they start using their intelligence they become dangerous, dangerous to the establishment, dangerous to the people who are in power, dangerous to the "haves"; dangerous to all kinds of oppression, exploitation, suppression; dangerous to the churches, dangerous to the states, dangerous to the nations.
Hello and welcome to Disincentive reviews! My first question is... How did you choose name for Nette? It's quite unusual one!
Thank you for having me here. Nette is a rather odd name, but for an extraordinary situation that happened, her parents needed something confusing and not gender biased. First, I named her Nat, but that seemed plain, didn’t fit the profile when written down, so I played with the same name but different spelling. I know a little bit of German, and knowing “nette” in German means “nice, pretty”, I decided it would be great to have a hidden meaning to it.
Do you really think society is so horrible? I hated how did people act in your book. It was simply sad (poor Nette)
As you know, that society in the book is a hybrid of what our world used to be, set in the future on another planet, combined with what would happen if some of the remarkable people that shaped our past and advanced our civilization were never born. I guess we would still be in the dark ages, and we would still burn witches. That’s exactly what happens in the book – burning witches theme. If you look at society today, there are still those urges in people, but civilization brought certain acceptable behavior, so many people censor themselves. Nevertheless, you can catch glimpses of it in riots, wars, racial and religious intolerance, and mob mindset. In my opinion, if something would happen that would remove present inhibitions (such as alien arrival or ww3), soon you would see people exhibiting those same patterns of behavior. I have a new book coming out soon that will show just that, but unfortunately it will be for +18 due to its explicit adult material.
Did you have a moment "I will be a writer!" Or did you dream about it for longer time?
For as long as I can remember, I had a vivid imagination and played with it in my mind. It never occurred to me that it would be fun for others to get in on it, guess I never stopped to consider that option. What’s great about social turmoil like recession – you get to stop and start thinking out of the box! Once that thought crossed my mind, I entered MS Word and will probably never come out.
You wrote books in few different genres. Don't you feel a little overwhelmed?
There are so many worlds, and situations in my head that have been brewing for many years, so now the only matter at hand is how fast I can write them down :) This is just a beginning… I can’t wait to get it all out and start on my educational children’s books. :) Now, that will be a quantum genre leap!
Who makes your amazing covers?
Besides writing, everything else is handled by Marraii Design.
Random questions time! (something I love) if zombie apocalypse comes, how will you fight?
Survival is overrated! If any apocalypse comes along, rest assured – I was killed in the first wave.
What is your favorite smell?
Vanilla :)
Thank you so much! Anything you'd like to add? :)
